ABSTRACT
These days, the huge development of modern science and technology has resulted in the shift of educational aim and method. In particular, the application of information technology in teaching English skills has been cared specially. Among them, the use of Microsoft Power point program to teach listening lessons within classes with the major aims to gain the highest effectiveness of teaching and learning could be a perfect solution. It is because Power point not only helps the teachers of English transfer the routine lessons into lively ones, but they also motivate students in learning process, by which improve their listening skill.
The main objectives of the study are to study the real situation of teachers using of Microsoft Power point program to teach English listening skill in some Hoang Hoa high schools, and to evaluate the effect after applying it.
To achieve the above objectives, the author used qualitative and quantitative research methods, including the use of questionnaires, class observation and interviews.
The data from survey questionnaires, information collected from class observation and interviews are discussed and interpreted particularly and statistically. Since then, the researcher tries to identify the strength and weakness of the teachers using Power point in teaching listening skill.
Finally, the study proposes useful Power point based listening skill teaching strategies so that high school teachers can make better use of it within their class.
PART A: INTRODUCTION
1. Rationale
In the current trend of global integration, English has become a common means of communication of human being all over the world. Vietnam- like many other countries- has been more and more active to integrate into the line of that common development. Therefore, the first and foremost demand is given that Vietnamese people have to know and use foreign languages especially English as a second language beside their mother tongue. Also, teaching and learning English has really become important and necessary in Vietnam
These days, English has been introduced as one of the compulsory subjects in most of different forms of schools in Vietnam. New English textbooks, which are born with the aims to require learners standard level of English as well as to meet, demand of social development focuses on the four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Of them, listening is considered difficult but important one, the basic for other three.
However, there is the fact that teaching and learning English listening skill at most schools in general and high schools in particular are still a big question. The reasons are the learners lack of motivation to listen, limited level of English, the fast native speech, noise, lack of instrument for listening and so on. In fact, the main reason is from the teachers methodology. He/she may still be familiar to the old method of teaching, or he/she gets difficult finding the suitable method, so he/she cannot motivate students to learn English listening skill.
Moreover, when the human being is lucky to live in the science and technology development, in addition to renovation in teaching- the shift in teaching English methodology from grammar-translation method to communicative approach in most high schools in Vietnam and the focus on learner-centered method, equipping institution with modern teaching facilities is essential in universities, colleges, and schools. There is an object and crucial needs of all disciplines in general, and of English including listening skill in particular to activate learning activities, and to enhance learners activeness, initiative, independence and autonomy in learning. However, how to innovate teaching methodology and to use facilities in teaching so that they are appropriate and effective depends on a variety of factors among which the teacher plays a crucial role.
